Golfers set to compete in Mountain West Championships, April 26-28

THIS WEEK: The Air Force golf team will travel to Creswell, Ore., for the Mountain West Championships, Friday-Sunday, April 26-28, at the Emerald Valley Golf Club. Live scoring will be available at GolfStat.com.  

LIVE STREAM: New this year, all three rounds will be streamed live on GolfKast via GKLive.TV. GKLive will livestream each day of the tournament, from the tee-off of the first group through the completion of the final group, providing coverage with 20 cameras on select holes. Hole 18 will include live play-by-play each day from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. PT. Jesse Kurtz of the Mountain West Network and Golfweek writer Lance Ringler will be on the call. THE FORMAT: Golfers will play 18 holes each day at the par-72, 7,210-yard course. Five golfers will play each day with the best four scorers counting toward the team total. Tee times will begin at 7:30 a.m. PT on Day 1 with eight-minute intervals between groups of two and 10-minute intervals between groups of three. Tee times will begin at 8 a.m. PT on Days 2 and 3, with the same intervals. On the first day, the first Falcon will hit the course at 10:10 am PT. THE FIELD: Air Force will be joined in the field by Boise State, No. 63 Colorado State, No. 46 Fresno State, Nevada, No. 19 New Mexico, No. 34 San Diego State, No. 57 San Jose State, No. 51 UNLV, Utah State, Wyoming

ABOUT THE COURSE: Located on 170 acres nestled along the coast fork of the Willamette River, Emerald Valley Golf Course is one of the premier championship public golf courses in the Willamette Valley. It is known for its tree-lined fairways, fast-consistent greens and tournament quality course conditions year round. Emerald Valley has earned the reputation as "The Home of Tournament Golf" and is one of the best tests of golf in Oregon. The home of the Oregon Ducks, Emerald Valley also boasts one of the premier practice facilities in the Northwest. The course was ranked first of 71 golf courses in Oregon by Oregon Business in 2005 and was the golf course of the year by the Oregon Golf Association in 2004.

LAST YEAR AT THE MW CHAMPIONSHISPS:  San Diego State, ranked 30th in the nation, led wire-to-wire and shot 804 (-60) to win the 2023 Mountain West Championship in Tucson, Ariz. New Mexico was second (829, -35), while UNLV was third (830, -34) and 23rd-ranked Colorado State was fourth (835, -29). Air Force placed 11th with an 884. Isaac Layne, a 2023 graduate, was the top Falcon in the 54-hole tournament with a 217 to tie for 34th place overall. Kahle shot 219, while Fonseca shot 225 and Park shot 234.

LAST TIME OUT: Air Force shot a 302 in the final round of the El Macero Classic for a 54-hole total of 926 to place 15th, April 12-14. Sophomore Alvaro Fonseca led the Falcons with an even-par 72 in the final round. Fonseca made three birdies, with three bogeys and 12 pars on the day. Junior Cameron Kahle shot a 74 on the final day while freshmen Carson Baker and Eli Huntington each shot 78 and junior Chris Park shot 79. Fonseca was the top Falcon over the 54-hole tournament with a 227, tying for 36th overall. Kahle shot a 228, followed by Baker (237), Huntington (242) and Park (244). Sophomore Brooks Morrell, competing as an individual, shot a 78 on the final day and finished the tournament with a 230, tied for 55th overall.
 
THE FALCONS AT THE MW CHAMPIONSHIPS: Air Force's best finish at the Mountain West Championships came in 2013 and 2014 with a fourth-place finish. The Falcons placed seventh in 2017 (871), its highest finish since 2014. Air Force's best team score came in 2014 with an 861 (+9). That same season, Kyle Westmoreland posted the Falcons' best individual finish, placing fourth (211, -2).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Sophomore Alvaro Fonseca leads the team with a 74.52 stroke average. Freshman Eli Huntington is second (75.19), followed by junior Cameron Kahle (75.37). The team's 283 on the final day of the Loyola Intercollegiate is the best of the season. The three-round score of 861 at the same tournament is also the best. Cameron Kahle has the best round by a Falcon this season with a 67 in the second round at Loyola. Eli Huntington shot a career-best 68 in the third round of the same tournament. Huntington and junior Christopher Park each own a round of 69 this season.
